Gangster room
Suite for Hotel Faidherbe
Collective work with
Lisa MALLUS
The first step in that project was a written exercise. After picking a character (a gangster) from a list , we wrote a sentence associating him to a pun playing with the French polysemous word "suite" (including "hotel room" sense):
"Le bandit prit la suite..." (pun playing with the close writing of "suite" and "fuite"/flight - sense between "the gangster ran away" and "the gangster appropriated the suite" ).
That sentence was the base of the next step, which consisted in writing a scenario ; what could the gangster discover in a suite, what could he need and how could he specifically use the space? -download scenario below
The final plan of the room was revealed right after that. We had to adapt as well as possible the scenario to the concrete and constraint spatial situation that we were given. Our scenario described the complicated life of the gangster, separated between misdeeds and family ; the suite is therefore divided in two parts, leading him progressively to quiet and straight life... It is structured with a sequence of hidden rooms, each one responding to a specific need.
This special way to get into a project allowed us to confer a real identity to the room, and push people who would use it to live a very unusual experience in the Hotel Faidherbe, which is actually about to open in Paris.
